Film industry needs to digitise to monetise

Our Bureau, Chennai,

South Indian films account for over half of the total films produced in India and the South accounts for 50 per cent of the total screens in the country.

Sharing this statistic in his keynote address at a FICCI media and entertainment meet, Tamil Nadu Governor, Mr K. Rossaiah, stressed the need for a concerted effort to take the South Indian Film Industry to international standards. Requesting every stakeholder in the industry to embrace the digital medium, film star, Kamal Haasan, Chairman of the conclave, said digitisation is a versatile medium and it is going to facilitate monetisation.

In his special address, Mr Ronnie Screwvala, Chairman, UTI Group, urged the industry to look at content beyond the broader segment than TV soap opera, reality show or a movie. Find out what young India wants to consume, he stressed. Young India wants the content to be interactive and personalised. “The content the youth want is different from what exists in the linear form,” he said.

Mr S.A. Chandrasekharan, President of the Tamil Film Producers Council, said corporates such as Reliance Entertainment and UTV should produce and buy small-budget films as most of the small-budget films find it difficult to attract buyers.click here
