The Adventures of Tintin: “The Secret of the Unicorn” set a new opening record for an animated film in India. Steven Spielberg’s motion-capture movie about the beloved Belgian journalist, made approximately 73.5 million rupees — about $1.4 million — over three days (with over 350 prints in both English and Hindi). Tintin’s success points to the growing market for Hollywood films in India. According to PWC’s Media and Entertainment Outlook 2011, the market for Hollywood movies grew by 30 percent in 2010 – the 75 foreign films, which were released, earned more than $78 million. And yet, the report states, this is only 4.5 percent of the total film industry revenues. India, despite having a sizable English-speaking population, continues to be a difficult market to penetrate. “Indian viewers understand sequels, stars and big franchise movies but it’s very hard to build up a product that is entirely unfamiliar,” said one studio executive. So the upcoming Reliance Entertainment release, “The Help,” which has glowing reviews and a unique resonance for India, where many middle and upper-middle class homes have help, will only release in four cities on Nov. 25. click here
