Hollywood studios tie up with B\'wood

Mumbai: Hollywood studios are strengthening their base in India by tying up with Bollywood production and distribution houses to push their products. Studio 18 has tied up with Paramount Pictures for distribution of films and UTV Motion Pictures will be co-producing and distributing Disney films in India.

Studio 18 will be distributing Paramount Pictures' films in Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh. Studio 18 COO Vikram Malhotra said, "We will be releasing Transformers Dark of the Moon which will be releasing in India on July 1 followed by Mission Impossible 4."

Walt Disney and UTV Motion Pictures on Thursday announced a creative alliance to co-produce a slew of Disney-branded films. Both the companies will share creative responsibilities with UTV managing the production, marketing and distribution of the films. Mahesh Samat, MD, Walt Disney, said, "Our goal is to produce films that have a direct connection with the dynamic and expanding India audience."

Ronnie Screwvala, CEO of UTV, said, "I believe this is a strategic initiative that further strengthens our relationship with Disney. Our creative and commercial capabilities and we welcome this co-production alliance."

But an industry insider said, "Hollywood studios should realize that it is a long road ahead and expecting instant results by making movies in the local language is not going to be easy and they will need to stick it out for at least five years if they are looking at short term returns then they are going to be disappointed.''

About 85 per cent of the business of Hollywood films comes from multiplexes. Says Vishal Anand, vice-president operation, Fun Cinemas, said, "The number of multiplexes screens too have exploded in the last couple of years which has allowed Hollywood films to reach out to more audiences. Also in case of UTV-Disney tie-up, UTV has a grip over content and has been producing and distributing maximum number of films which be advantageous for Disney. Also Studio 18 already has a tie-up with Paramount internationally which now they are planning to exploit locally."
