16% Of Game Developers Are Developing For VR

While virtual reality technology opens the door to all kinds of possibilities when it comes to gaming, the bigger question is will developers hop on board with the idea? After all we’ve seen different types of technology come and go that all held promise, so who’s to say that virtual reality won’t become the next flop like 3D phones?

The good news is that developers appear to be on board with the idea. In a survey conducted by the Game Developers Conference (GDC), they polled around 2,000 developers and found that nearly a fifth of them are actually working on virtual reality titles. To be more specific, the survey found that 16% are working on such titles, which is a pretty huge increase from last year where only 7% of those polled were developing VR titles.

Another 15% of the developers said that the next title they plan on creating will be for virtual reality, which once again is more than double of last year’s poll where only 7% said that they would be interested in virtual reality. As for platforms, unsurprisingly the majority of developers (19%) said that they were working on titles for the Oculus Rift.

8% said that they were working on the Gear VR from Samsung, and another 7% said that they were developing for Google Cardboard. Sony’s PlayStation VR and the HTC Vive accounted for about 6%. Naturally we are curious as to who will eventually lead the VR charge, but for now creating awareness and an ecosystem of games for VR is probably more important. read more
